Knitting comes down to a few core skills. Once you can cast on, knit, purl, and bind off, you can make a huge range of projects.
What you need
Start with a smooth worsted-weight yarn in a light color and a pair of US size 8 (5 mm) needles. Light yarn makes your stitches easy to see while you learn.
The core stitches
Learn to cast on, then the knit stitch, then the purl stitch, and finally how to bind off. Knit and purl combined make almost every pattern, from garter to ribbing to stockinette.
