Fence Post Spacing Chart

Post spacing is usually set by the panel or rail length of your fence type. This chart gives the typical spacing for common fences, measured on center.

Fence type Post spacing
Wood privacy 6 – 8 ft
Chain link up to 10 ft
Vinyl panel 6 – 8 ft per panel
Ranch rail 8 ft
Picket 6 – 8 ft
Set posts deep. Bury about one-third of the post length and extend below the frost line, set in concrete. Closer spacing adds strength on windy or sloped sites.
