G94 sets the feed-rate mode to units per minute, so an F value is read as inches (or millimeters) per minute. It is the normal mode for milling. Its counterpart, G95, reads feed as units per revolution and is common on lathes.
Format
G95 (feed in units per revolution)
How it works
- Under G94, F10.0 means 10 inches per minute regardless of spindle speed.
- Under G95, F0.005 means 0.005 inches per revolution, so table speed scales with RPM.
- Most mills power up in G94; set it explicitly to be safe.

FAQ
What’s the difference between G94 and G95? G94 sets feed rate in distance per minute, while G95 sets feed rate in distance per spindle revolution. Milling typically uses G94; turning operations commonly use G95 since feed per revolution is the more natural way to program a lathe.
Do I need to specify G94 or G95 in every program? Most controls power up in G94 by default, but explicitly stating it at the start of a program is good practice, since it removes any ambiguity about which feed mode is active regardless of what a previous program left behind.
