Shutter Size Calculator

Size exterior shutters for a window. Enter the window dimensions and shutter type to get each shutter size and how many to buy.

window with shutter pair
Shutter Size (each)
in.
Width and height of one shutter panel.

Usage Tip

A shutter much narrower than half the window looks undersized — it should read as if the pair could close over the glass. For operable shutters, buy hinges and holdbacks rated for the panel weight.

THE MATH
Each shutter width = Window width / 2
Each shutter height = Window height
Pairs = Number of windows; Total shutters = pairs × 2
Shutters hang in pairs, one per side, so each panel is half the window width. Sizing each at half-width keeps the proportions right whether the shutters are fixed or operable.
Functional shutters are trimmed slightly so the closed pair fits the opening with a small center gap.
Decorative shutters are mounted fixed beside the window; size them to look like they could cover it (half the width, full height).
Functional shutters must actually close over the opening — account for the center meeting gap, hinge offset, and that the open shutters clear adjacent trim or other windows.
Measure the window opening itself, not the outside casing, and check local HOA or historic-district rules on shutter style.
