Mulch Calculator

Calculate mulch volume for garden beds, tree rings, or landscape areas, in cubic yards and bags.

Mulch Volume
cubic yards
Plus bag count.

Usage Tip

Bulk mulch by the yard is far cheaper than bags once you pass about ten bags; keep mulch a few inches off plant stems and trunks.

THE MATH
cubic feet = area × depth ÷ 12
cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27, bags = cubic feet ÷ 2
Mulch volume is the bed area times the depth, converted to cubic yards (27 cubic feet per yard). Bagged mulch usually comes in 2-cubic-foot bags.
Enter the bed area and the mulch depth in inches (2 to 3 inches is typical).
The result shows cubic yards for bulk delivery and the equivalent bag count.
