Material Waste Cost Calculator

See what material waste is costing you. Enter the quantity, price per unit, and waste factor to find the dollar cost of waste.

Cost of Waste
Extra money spent on waste.

Usage Tip

Lay out cuts on paper (or use a layout calculator) before buying. On costly materials, a little careful planning can save many times what the planning is worth.

THE MATH
Waste units = quantity × waste%
Cost of waste = waste units × price
Total = (quantity + waste units) × price
Every material order includes some waste — offcuts, breakage, and mistakes. The waste percentage is extra material you pay for but do not install.
On expensive materials, a high waste factor adds up fast, so it pays to plan cuts and layout.
Waste is unavoidable but controllable: efficient layout, standard sizes, and careful cutting all cut it.
Pricey materials (natural stone, hardwood, large-format tile) make every percent of waste expensive — plan those layouts carefully.
Some waste is worth it: buying from one dye lot or keeping spares for repairs can beat a tight order you cannot match later.
