Usage Tip

Sketch the run and place corners and appliances first, then fill the straight sections with stock widths. Order a filler strip or two — almost every layout needs them.

THE MATH
Base cabinets = round up of (Base run × 12 ÷ avg width)
Wall cabinets = round up of (Upper run × 12 ÷ avg width)
Total = base + wall cabinets
Stock cabinets come in set widths (commonly 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, and 36″). Using an average width gives a quick cabinet count before you lay out exact sizes.
Run lengths are the wall space the cabinets fill, not counting appliances.
Subtract appliance widths (range, dishwasher, refrigerator) from the run before counting — enter only the space cabinets will fill.
Inside corners need a corner or lazy-Susan cabinet and lose some usable width; add filler strips where cabinets meet walls or each other.
Wall-cabinet runs are usually shorter than base runs because of windows, range hoods, and open wall space — measure each separately.
